Backshadowing, also known as using flashbacks or memory devices, is the opposite of foreshadowing. Instead of hinting at future events, backshadowing reveals past events, providing context and information about what has already happened.
Purpose: To offer insight into characters' motivations, explain current plot points, or reveal the origins of a conflict.
Effect: Instead of building suspense or anticipation for what's to come, backshadowing provides a sense of understanding about the present situation. It can create a feeling of completion.
Examples: A character recalling a traumatic childhood event, a flashback showing how two characters first met, or a character detailing their history to another person.
